Nike SB
pro-skater, Omar Salazar, had the skating crowd cranking their necks in anticipation for close to a year now for his pro model sneaker, the Nike SB Zoom Omar Salazar Signature Model. After we had first previewed the sneaker last June and followed up with videos and images, the much discussed skate shoes are finally available for avid skaters looking for fresher and more technical options.
Since Omar joined the Nike SB family in 2005, he had been donning one of Nike SB’s most technical shoes, the Zoom E-Clue. Omar loved the durability and comfort of the Zoom E-Clue; thus, for his own model, he remains uncompromising on these two factors and worked with James Arizumi to create a technically advanced mid-top that retains the classic skate shoe silhouette.
The Zoom Omar Salazar Signature Model is the first skate shoe that had incorporated Nike Flywire technology (a lightweight support system that provides stability and heel lock when used in the rear of the shoe). While this is a feat in its own right, the technical specifics of the shoes don’t just end here. Other thoughtful details include the one-piece toe construction that reduces weight while providing stability (complimenting the Flywire panel in the back), hidden tongue pocket to allow for adjustable tongue thickness, spaced ribbed collar for low-profile cushioning and heel lock, and hidden pull tab window integrated into the floating back arm panel. In terms of soles, the phylon midsoles feature Zoom Air Bag for additional lightweight cushioning and tread cupsoles give skaters added grip.
The campaign for his new shoes is named after Omar’s nickname, “Outer Space”, and it remains a theme not just in terms of campaign but also in terms of shoe design (the outsole tread features a thin flexible rubber edge for a vulc-like flick). To commemorate the shoe release, matching “Welcome To Outer Space” logo tees are released this month as well, alongside a special video created by Jon Humphries and Jason Hernadez shows Salazar defying gravity, flying off ramps and walls in his new pro model. The video was shot in a top-secret location which mimics the interior of a space shuttle or station. Check out the video and the shoes (there are four colorways available) which are dropping starting March.
