Given that DJs are often hidden away in a hot and tiny booth, you can’t really blame them for not adopting the same standards as their fans on the dance floor. Fortunately, for our dance music heroes, at least they don’t have to enter through the front door, past the eagle eyes of the fashion conscious doormen. Otherwise they may never have made it to work!
Nowadays however, the overall image of the DJ in Ibiza is becoming as increasingly as important as the music they play, meaning that sporting the right clothing is essential. But when you consider that DJs are jumping around behind the decks for hours at a time, ultimately, their comfort is still important. Which is where Y-3 comes in.
Y-3 is the collaboration between Japanese designer Yohji Yamamoto and sports brand Adidas. The ‘Y’ is for Yamamoto, the ‘3’ represents Adidas’s signature three stripes, and the dash in between signifies the link between the two. Clever huh?
Launched in 2003, Y-3 didn’t take long to achieve cult status. The fashion sportswear combo of fantastic design and craftsmanship was an immediate hit with some Very Big Name DJs, and remains so to this day. It certainly helps that the brand is super-exclusive (not a collection you’ll find in your local sports warehouse), and more often than not, comes in blacker than black…
Eight years on, and it’s not just the trainers that remain a hit. It’s clothing, caps, bags – the works. This season, in an homage to the DJs who support Y-3, there is even a limited edition t-shirt emblazoned with three headphones – sure to be a hit in a place like Ibiza (or with alien life forms with three ears!)
reVOLVER is stocking Y-3 for the first time in 2010 so get in early to snap it up. Hey – you may not be able to play like a big name DJ, but at least you can look like one.........
