It is quite miraculous, considering how adidas Originals seems to be
collaborating with everybody this year, that the label manages to nail
pretty much every single collaboration spot-on, and refined the practiced yet
somewhat tired art of partnership. While many collaborations seem to be
losing steam and the concept becomes increasingly difficult to execute,
blacked-out capsule collection of sneakers and apparel to celebrate the
2010 FIFA World Cup. Stipulated: 2010 FIFA World Cup items have
flooded the market seeing how we are nearing on June and the most
anticipated kick-off, and nothing seems to stand out anymore.
One of the interesting things to note about this cool
(Quite literally, since black is forever classic, and forever cool)
collection done up in mastermind Japan’s tough, rock-and-roll
aesthetics is that instead of an appropriate soccer cleat, the duo
decided to create a new basketball silhouette– the Hardland. While
the previewed shoes is monochromatic in black and white, absolutely
signature of masterind Japan, the tongue takes on a more brazen
look not unfamiliar to Jeremy Scott’s ostentatious tongues, to feature
a large white skull and cross bones mastermind Japan logo. Also,
instead of marking the shoes with three-stripes on the side, they have
decided to move the branding to the tongue, make the shoes look
interestingly ventilated… (The perforated upper adds to the interesting
textural contrast and airy mind-play as well). Last but not least, the
new Hardland sneakers come with an interesting lace system which
defies the traditional equidistant eyelets, allowing wearers to take
more creative liberty in “webbing” their shoes.
Shoes aside, co-branded apparel, also in black and white, avoiding
everything else in the spectrum, are sweat pants, jackets and jerseys.
Perhaps not the soccer-ready training packs, these are definitely cool
to rock on the streets, and will take you easily from watching Brazil
duke it out with other teams at the sports bars, to a celebratory
(or misery-obliterating) drink at the hip club next door. The shoes
will debut extremely soon on June 16 at Isetan Shinjuku, so stay tuned!
