Souk Djs.....

Portrait: The Martinez Brothers @ Movement 2010

by Soukwear

By now you've heard about the Martinez Brothers. These guys are practically the definition of new blood. Music always played a significant role in the Martinez home: the boys grew up playing a variety of instruments—keyboards, bass, and mainly drums and percussion. They'd play in church, at home, in various bands around the Bronx. It was their father, a veteran of disco-era clubs like the Paradise Garage, that turned them on to disco and house, via radio programs like Timmy Regisford's Kiss FM show and CDs that he'd bring home in an attempt to expand the boys' musical worldview. At such a young age, the duo have a list of accolades that many in their field would be envious of. From dates around the world, successful releases, including their follow up EP to the smash "Debbie Downer" entitled Don't No Yet on Dennis Ferrer's Objektivity label, The Martinez Brothers are the new breed of DJ poised to remain relevant for years to come. Catch the duo on the Beatport stage at Movement 2010 to be held in Detroit's Hart Plaza over Memorial Day Weekend, May 29-31, 2010.

Have you played at Movement/DEMF festival before? If this is your first time what are your impressions of the festival?
This is going to be our first time actually playing at the festival, but we actually attended it last year and we had so much fun, it was really amazing. So we're really excited to be a part of it this year for sure.

What track would be your tribute to Detroit?
One of the first house records we got into was Galaxy 2 Galaxy- "Hi Tech Jazz" on UR, one of our favorite joints that happens to come out of Detroit, definitely an anthem

Best DJ moment of 2010 so far?
So far we would have to say probably a gig we did at Sankeys in Manchester not so long ago, one of the best vibes and best parties this year and for us really stands out. Was a really amazing night.

Best recent gift?
Recently got a bass guitar! Always wanted one and finally got one!

Next big purchase?
Next big purchase will definitely be a house or an apartment, time to leave the nest.

Best producer of 2010?
Ask us in 2011.

What you miss most about home when abroad?
Definitely our family and our mother's cooking, we always say there's nothing better then coming home from a long trip and having a good home cooked meal.

Indispensable travel item?
Definitely the laptop.

Favorite touring memento?
Musical instruments that we buy all over the world.

Best record of WMC 2010?
Would probably have to say Dennis Ferrer- "Hey Hey", heard it absolutely everywhere.

What’s on your drink rider?
Grey Goose, Red Bull, Waters and Cokes.

iPhone or Blackberry?
Most definitely the Crackberry

What’s on your iPod playlist?
Chick Corea, Biggie, J Dilla, Hector Lavoe, Weather Report, Jay-Z, Carl Craig, Stevie Wonder, Radio Slave, too much stuff to name.

Favorite city/club to play?
Hmm, either Germany or the U.K, they're both neck and neck.

Favorite city/country for holiday?
We love Puerto Rico, and the Canary Islands are also really nice.

Hobbies?
Making music, DJing, Movies, Girls, Parties, Eating, anything you expect a 21 year old and an 18 year old to be into.

Personal hero?
Our Father, in our eyes, the most amazing person we've ever known

Favorite book?
Bodega Dreams By Ernesto Quinonez

Guilty pleasure artist/record?
C'mon, "Sailing" by Christopher Cross is a good record.

What did you want to be when you were a kid?
We always wanted to be involved in some way shape or form with music, we just had no idea we would become DJs, sometimes we just cant believe that this a what we do, love it.

Least favorite day job before DJing?
Retail clothing store, sucked so bad

One thing you should always do?
Learn new things.

One thing you should never do?
Become complacent.

New for you in 2010?
Just released a new EP this passed month which we're really proud of, should have another one before or during the summer, working on a mix cd, and touring like crazy!

Upcoming tour dates?
Got gigs coming up in Spain, New York, Switzerland, Detroit of course, Amsterdam, Chicago, London, Montreal, Austria, Italy should be a fun next couple of weeks!
